Head impacts in American football can be associated with Mild Traumatic Brain Injury (MTBI).  While helmets have proven to offer great protective benefits, assessing protection from facial impacts is not well addressed by current safety standards.  With support from the NFL, a new headform has been developed to measure loads to the jaw allowing the effectiveness of facemasks and mouthguards on reducing MTBI to be assessed.  The biomechanical basis can be found in a recent paper: Craig MJ, Viano DC and Bir CA  "Jaw Loading Response of Current ATDs", SAE paper 2009-01-0388.
